The Tippecanoe Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Coalition joined Area IV as a Health and Wellness Program in September of 2015. The mission of the Coalition is to help residents of Tippecanoe County achieve a healthy lifestyle through community partnerships and education. As a coalition we strive to help every individual reach their full potential.
Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death and disease in the United States. Annually, tobacco use causes more deaths than alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides, combined. The impact of tobacco in Indiana is staggering, costing Hoosiers 11,100 lives each year.
The problem is only growing as large tobacco companies target our youth through point-of-sale marketing strategies that are tailored explicitly to lure youth down a path of unhealthy choices. The number of youth smoking e-cigarettes is astonishing. The National Youth Tobacco Survey reports that current e-cigarette use among high school students increased from 4.5 percent to 13.4 percent in one year. This means the number of youth using e-cigarettes jumped from 660,000 to 2 million high school students. The numbers for middle school students are just as frightening! E-cigarette usage for middle school youth more than tripled in one year! Jumping from 1.1 percent to 3.9 percent in one year. That equates to approximately 120,000 middle school students using e-cigarettes last year to now 450,000 students. This is why the work of the Tippecanoe Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Coalition is so important. Please feel free to reach out to us at the contact information below.
